What Will We Do in Heaven?

When my children were young , my wife Nancy and I were very busy with all it takes to raise a family.  Now they are grown and gone but it seems Nancy and I are still always busy doing something.  After all, very few people like to sit around being bored.  When we travel somewhere we talk about what we’re going to do when we get there.  Now, as are getting older, we think about what we’re going to be doing when we get to heaven.  But just what exactly will we be doing in heaven?  One thing is sure, we won’t be bored floating on clouds playing harps!  Let’s see what God tells us in the Bible.

Of course, we know we will worship God.  The scenes of the throne in heaven recorded in the book of Revelation show spontaneous, all-encompassing worship (Revelation 5:9).  “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.'” (Revelation 7:9-12)  If you believe in Jesus, you will be part of that scene!  Doesn’t sound boring, does it?

In addition to worship, we’ll also serve God.  Now that sounds like work, and many people don’t like work.  But this will be different.  We’ll have a heart of servanthood and want to show God our love by our work as well as our words.   We will rule with Him.  That implies works of service.  There will be believers who live through the Tribulation and will populate the earth.  Perhaps we will help teach and govern them.  Whatever is involved in serving God in heaven, we can be sure it will be delightful.

One of the things we most look forward to in heaven is fellowship with others.  We look forward to being reunited with loved ones who have died as well as meeting Bible people we have read about (Matthew 8:11).  I am looking forward to spending time with Christians I have met in India but couldn’t talk to.

Especial wonderful will be having fellowship with God. We will see God (Matthew 5:8; Revelation 22:4). “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.'” (Revelation 21:3). When Jesus talks about heaven He often refers to banquets (Isaiah 25:6; Revelation 19:9) – party time in heaven!  With all sin and sorrow gone, and perfect harmony among all believers, our fellowship in heaven will be, well, “heavenly.”

Why doesn’t God tell us more about what we will be doing in heaven?  Probably because it is too great for us to comprehend with our limited vocabulary and understanding, as Paul himself discovered (2 Corinthians 12:4).  We know God is preparing a special place for us to live (John 14:1-2).  If He created this beautiful world in 6 days, imagine what heaven will be like.

What are you looking to most in heaven?  If you could look back on your life now when you get to heaven, what will you wish you could have done differently?  Now is your chance to make that correction.
