THINKING ABOUT HEAVEN
The older I get the more I think about heaven. As most of my life passes behind me I am so glad I have a future in heaven with Jesus forever. Sometimes I think about the past and all God’s blessings that he has given me, but more and more I think about Heaven and where I am going. I think about the people who are there that I will get to meet and spend time with. Especially I wonder what it will really be like to see Jesus and be with him.
As a pastor, I preached and thought about heaven numerous times. I’ve studied passages about it and listened to what others say about it. But there’s only so much we can know until we get there. The vocabulary we now have in use is made for this world. It doesn’t do justice in describing the next. What do we know about what we’ll be doing in heaven?
I’LL WORSHIP GOD. One of my most enjoyable experiences on earth is a good time of worship. I know these times here are nothing like what they will be in heaven. I look forward to true, real worship. Worship is one of the things we’ll be doing most in heaven (Revelation 7:9-12), and it’ll never get boring. And I’ll be able to sing as beautifully as others (Revelation 5:9)! I won’t have to worry about forgetting to turn the mic off before I sing and have people in the back of the church waving their arms and jumping up and down to remind me. My “joyful noise” will turn into beautiful music.
I’LL SERVE GOD. One of the ways we will worship Him is by serving Him. It will be a joy and a privilege to serve in whatever way He chooses. I look forward to teaching those on earth during the Millennium. Teaching is a great joy to me and to be able to exercise my gift without fighting a clock or my own limitations will be, well, heavenly! The Bible says God will reward us in heaven for faithful service here on earth. I think one of the ways He rewards us is by the positions He gives us to serve Him (Matthew 25:21,23; Revelation 5:10).
I’LL FELLOWSHIP WITH OTHERS. As an introvert, I shy away from people and extended times of involvement with others. I think in heaven that won’t be an issue. God will give us a joy for being with each other. I look forward to meeting and talking with saints of old and hearing about their life experiences. I anticipate spending time with pastors from India and Africa that I can’t communicate with now but will be able to enjoy in heaven. There will be many people there from my past and present that I want to get to know better. I’m looking forward to seeing relatives and ancestors and hearing their stories as well (Matthew 8:11; Isaiah 25:6; Revelation 19:9).
I’LL FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD. I’ll not only worship and serve God, but I’ll also fellowship with Him. I don’t quite know what that’ll be like but I know it’ll happen and it’ll be wonderful (Revelation 21:3). Imagine seeing Jesus’ face and having him look at me and smile (Revelation 22:4).
I’LL HAVE A MUCH BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AND HIS WORD. I don’t know if it will be instantaneous or over time. But I do know that I will learn and grow in knowledge and understanding beyond anything I could imagine in this life. I love studying and learning God’s Word now I can only imagine how wonderful that will be (1 Corinthians 13:12).
I’LL BE HEALTHY AND HAPPY. I’ll experience total and complete peace. Joy will be beyond what I can imagine. I’ll be active and occupied, yet it will be a time of rest. (Revelation 21:1-2; Psalm 16:11)
I know it’ll be much greater than I can ever imagine. We will need a new vocabulary to explain it (John 14:1-3). I’m getting closer every day and so are you. I look forward to being here. Will I see you there?
Revelation 21:4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
How often do you think of heaven? Slowly read Revelation 21:1-7 and put yourself in the place you are reading about. Think about what you will be doing in heaven.
