THE TRUTH ABOUT ANGELS
Angels are very popular today. Our culture really focuses on them. People may not believe they really exist, but I think many people would like them to for they see them as friendly, helpful, nonthreatening spiritual beings. Most people back off from belief in God because it makes us accountable to Him, but angels don’t see to expect anything of us. Is that what the Bible says about them? Let’s see.
THEIR CREATION. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements — surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4-8). “The sons of God” to refer to angels. Some translations use the word “angels”. The Bible reveals the angels were created before the world, and they rejoiced and sang during Creation.
THEIR OCCUPATION. “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” (Psalm 91:11-13). Angels guard and protect people as God commands them. This is mainly Christians but can be anyone God chooses.
THEIR APPEARANCE. “… And from the midst of it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had a human likeness, but each had four faces, and each of them had four wings. .. As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches moving to and fro among the living creatures… When they went, they went in any of their four directions without turning as they went. And their rims were tall and awesome, and the rims of all four were full of eyes all around…When they stood still, they let down their wings” (Ezekiel 1:4-25). Usually, angels take on the appearance of people when they manifest to us (Hebrews 13:2), and often they do so without us realizing they are angels and not people, but their appearance in heaven is quite awesome.
THEIR POSITION. “I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, but he said to me, ‘You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God’” (Revelation 22:8-9). Angels are servants, and should not be worshipped or treated like they are on the same level as God. Some people pray to angels, and treat them like they are God. But the angels themselves do not see themselves that way.
THEIR IGNORANCE OF GRACE. “Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories, things into which angels long to look” (1 Peter 1:10-12). Angels had a one-time chance to exercise their free will in the very beginning. The ones who rebelled were sent out of heaven and are now called demons (2 Peter 2:4). Those who chose to serve God are locked into their present perfect state. They cannot sin so they know nothing of God’s grace and mercy. They must be amazed to see God show mercy to human beings who continually take advantage of Him and disobey Him. Who could blame them?
THEIR WARFARE. “Then he said to me, ‘Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia, and came to make you understand what is to happen to your people in the latter days. For the vision is for days yet to come’” (Daniel 10:12-14). This passage gives us a glimpse of what goes on in the spiritual realm and what spiritual warfare really looks like in the heavenlies. Demons try to interfere with God’s work but God triumphs in the end. Evidently there’s a lot going on around us that we know nothing about!
GUARDIAN ANGLES. “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). The Bible implies certain angels are assigned to a person to carry out God’s will in their life. How great is that!
JESUS’ RETURN. “ For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:38). When Jesus returns, angels will accompany Him.
WE WILL JUDGE THE ANGELS. “Do you not know that we are to judge angels?” (1 Corinthians 6:3a). Whether this is a judgment of fallen angels, or discerning between issues brought by angels serving in the kingdom, believers will have a level of authority over angels. What great privileges we have as the Bride of Christ!
JESUS RULES THE ANGELS. “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16). While some cults say angels are equal to Jesus, He makes it clear he is superior to them.
One day we’ll send eternity with them in heaven, worshiping and serving Jesus. Now it’s important to remember we aren’t alone. We are supported by angel armies ready to do whatever God commands.
