In the previous blog we looked at passages in 1 John that describe changes that take place in those who are truly born again. Understanding these can remove any doubt and give great assurance of salvation. We saw 1) we have a new recognition of sin (1 John 1:7-(), 2) we have a new desire (1 John 2:3-4), 3) we have a new love of others (1 John 2:9-10) and 4) we have a new Master (1 John 2:15-17). We’ll look at 3 more traits in this blog
- WE HAVE NEW STRENGTH. 1 John 2:29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him. 1 John 4:13 We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. We are not free from temptation after salvation (1 John 1:8-10; 1 Corinthians 10:13), but we now have a greater power in us by God’s Spirit so we can resist sin and live as Jesus would have us live. We can face difficulties with faith, persecution with courage and suffering with peace. The strength comes from God (Acts 1:8). This enables us to overcome sin and temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13), the power to speak the gospel (1 Corinthians 2:4), the power to understand Scripture (1 Corinthians 2:14, John 16), and the power to live a fruitful life in the image of Christ (Galatians 5:22-23, 1 Peter 1:3-11, John 15:1-11). Are you aware of God’s power working in and through you, beyond what you could do in your own strength? That is more proof God lives in you.
- NEW LIFE GOAL. 1 John 2:28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. Our purpose in living is to continue (remain, abide) in Him, knowing that we will spend eternity with Him when we die. Those outside Christ have no such hope or assurance. They live only for this life and nothing beyond. We know there is something more than this life, this world. We know we have a future with God forever. Our home is in heaven, not this world. The true believer lives with anticipation of the return of the Savior, when everything will be set right and justice and righteousness will reign. For the saved, this world holds little attraction, except to provide a temporary place to wait for our real lives to begin (1 John 5:20). Do you have a desire to live for more than just satisficing your appetites with things of this world? Do you look forward to being with Jesus in haven? That is proof of God living in you. That is another proof of God living in you.
- NEW UNDERSTANDING OF JESUS. 1 John 4:15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. 1 John 2:22–23 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist—he denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. This is a clear dividing line between God’s people and others. For Christians, Jesus is God Himself, sent to earth to provide salvation (John 1:18), and for unbelievers He is just another man in history. God’s Spirit reveals to those He indwells that Jesus is God (Matthew 16:17). Can you firmly state that Jesus is God come to earth to save us from sin? That, too, is proof of God living in you.
Look over these 7 proofs. If you don’t see them in your life, you need to come to Jesus for salvation. Accept His free gift of forgiveness. Then He will indwell you and these will be present. But if you already see them at work in your life then there is no need to every doubt or question your salvation. Rest assured in it. Go ahead in the full power and love of Jesus!
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
Thank God for all these things He has done in you. Meditate on them and let His love and peace fill you. Rejoice in Him and praise Him for all these things.
