When a person gets a job they are given a description of what duties they are to perform. God has a job description for pastors as well, and that’s what the session “Duties of Leaders,” is about. Being a Christian leader is an honor and privilege (1 Timothy 3:1), but it is also a great responsibility.
The first and most important obligation is to preach and teach God’s Word to others (2 Timothy 4:2; 1 Corinthians 9:16). The Greek word commanding this is used of an ambassador sent by a king to proclaim his message with authority. It was a great responsibility and also a wonderful honor. That is also true of a pastor who communicates God’s truth to others.
Pastors and leaders are to always be ready to do this at any time and in any place. We must correct error, point out sin and encourage those who are struggling. These must be done with patience and with great attention to all God’s Word says. Those who do this must be self-controlled and alert because representing Jesus is not an easy task. Hardships of many kinds must be endured. We must faithfully serve God in all we do.
These duties can be summarized in two commands: communicate the Word and love the people. When we do that, God will use it for His glory. This isn’t just for leaders but for each and every Christian. Proclaim the truth of God’s Word and love the people with whom you come in contact. Each one of us can do that!
2 Timothy 4:1-5 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
God didn’t call us to build His church but to preach His Word. Are you doing this by your example as well as your words? Ask God to give you opportunities to share His truth with other.
I have spoken to some churches and pastors’ conferences and training in India on Zoom. It has been a privilege and a blessing to me. If I could help your group in this way email me at jerry@schmoyer.net
