LIES ABOUT SCRIPTURE
Fact number one. We need to feed on God’s word to grow spiritually. There is no other way to become mature in our faith except by reading and studying the Bible.
Fact number two Satan does not want us to grow spiritually, so he will do anything he can to keep us from God’s word. One of the main ways he does that is through feeding us lies about the Bible. Satan is a liar and everything he says is to deceive (John 8:44). We are not to be ignorant of his tricks and traps (2 Corinthians 2:11). Be careful to avoid the lies he will feed you about God’s word.
Lie number one: “You already know what the Bible says, so you don’t need to spend time reading it.” If we are busy, lazy or don’t want to be convicted by God’s word, this lie provides a great excuse to avoid it.. We can grab hold of this lie as an excuse to not spend God time in the Bible. The truth is none of us know God’s word as well as we could or should. There is always more to learn. Even reading parts we know well bring fresh encouragement and spiritual strength. There’s always more to be gained by reading the Bible.
Lie number two: “The Bible is too hard to understand, so don’t bother trying to study it. Let the preachers do that.” The truth is that anyone can read the Bible and gain from it. Even a child. There were times in history when Christians were not allowed to own a copy of the Bible. Now we all have many in our homes. That’s a great privilege. But it doesn’t do us any good in our homes unless we have it in our heads and hearts. You don’t have to be a Bible scholar or know Greek or Hebrew to know what it says. Any believer can read it and God’s Spirit will teach and apply God’s truth to us.
Lie number three: “The translators got it all wrong, so don’t bother reading it.” While there can be controversy about how some things should be translated in the Bible, there is no controversy over the basic truths that it contains. There can be various ways of conveying a truth from one language to another. But that doesn’t mean a particular translator is are wrong. It just means that it can be difficult for one language to convey exactly what another is saying. That doesn’t mean any one translation is incorrect, though.
Lie number four: “The Bible is full of contradictions, so you can’t trust what it says.” There are no contradictions in Scripture regarding any doctrine or truth of consequence. There are places where one writer will say 100 people were killed and another will say it was a thousand. Scholars can give various explanations for this. But this does not mean the Bible is untrustworthy. Actually it means just the opposite. If the Bible where a man-made book, those differences would have been corrected long ago instead of continued to be copied and passed on. The fact that they’re still there shows that the Bible is brought to us in exactly the same as it was written.
Lie number five: “You’re too busy now. You can read it later when you have more time. It’s a great book to study just don’t do it now.” This, too, is a great excuse for those who are busy, lazy, or are living in disobedience to the Bible.
Studying God’s Word takes effort and commitment, but the benefits are well worth it. It’s easy to find justification to not do it, and Satan’s lies are available for anyone looking for an excuse. He knows that Scripture brings victory over his forces and over sin in our lives, so it stands to reason he will do all we can to keep us from the Bible. How successful is his plan with you? 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
