WHAT DO DEMONS REALLY LOOK LIKE?
The world claims to not believe in Satan or demons, but it is certainly preoccupied with them. They are common themes in art, literature, movies, TV programs and especially video games They are depicted in many different forms and ways, but what do they really look like?
Since they, like angels, do not have a physical body, we do not have a clear description in the Bible (Jude 1:6; 2 Peter 2:4). When depicted or described by the secular world, they are ugly, evil, destructive, dark, violent and scary (John 10:10; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5). Sometimes Satan is presented as a smooth-talking, intelligent figure who is suave and attractive. His true sinister nature is concealed beneath his immense charm. This is more in line with the way Paul describes him as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14).
If we aren’t sure what they look like, can we know when we encounter one? Most definitely! Their spiritual presence can be clearly understood. The Holy Spirit in us will react to the evil in them and alert us immediately. He will help us sense their evil presence so we can be alert and on our guard. They are crafty and deceptive (Genesis 3:1, 2 Corinthians 11:3; Romans 16:20). Satan is a roaring lion seeking to devour us (1 Peter 5:8), a dragon (Revelation 20:1-6) and a great beast with horns (Daniel 7) and tails (Revelation 18).
In third world countries, like India, they manifest in evil ways to cause fear in people. In more ‘civilized’ cultures, like the USA and Europe, they deceive people into thinking they don’t exist. This is actually more dangerous.
While we may not be able to see them with our physical eyes, we can certainly ‘see’ them through spiritual eyes as God’s Spirit pricks our spirit in awareness. We never know when that might happen. That’s why we must keep our armor on at all times (Ephesians 6:10-17). Demons shudder at the name of Jesus (James 2:19). He has given us authority in His name to cast our demons and deliver those who seek to be free (Luke 10:17-20; Mark 16:15-18). The truth of God’s Word will counter Satan’s lies (Matthew 4:1-11; Psalms 119:105-108) and the power to overcome sin in their lives (John 1:5; Hebrews 2:14; James 4:7; 1 John 4:4).
So don’t look for them with your physical eyesight, but be sensitive to the Spirit’s work inside of you. Trust His impulses and warnings. Don’t ignore His proddings and promptings. Spend time in His Word, meditating and listening to Him. Let Him be your eyes and you’ll never go wrong.
John 14:16-17, 26 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. … But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
